The repairs San Antonio homes actually need
A gas fireplace is a small appliance with a handful of parts that age on a schedule. After a long Texas off-season the failures cluster: the pilot will not hold when you release the knob, the wall switch does nothing, the remote died, the blower rattles, or the glass soots because a log shifted. Those are repair jobs. They are not a reason to shop for a new unit unless the firebox or heat exchanger is spent.
We start with troubleshooting when the symptom is already obvious, or with a safety inspection when you want the whole system read. Repair work is quoted after the failed component is identified. We do not publish a menu of part prices because a Heatilator millivolt valve and a Napoleon electronic module are not the same job.
Pilot will not stay lit
This is the most common call from Alamo Heights bungalows and 1990s production homes alike. The thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and tells the valve it is safe to stay open. Dust, a weak pilot, or a worn sensor drops the millivolt reading. Replacing the sensor without cleaning the pilot orifice just repeats the failure in a year. We measure, clean, then replace if the reading stays low.
Fireplace lights at the unit but ignores the remote
Millivolt systems use a thermopile to power the wall switch and receiver. When that output sags, the fireplace still has a pilot and still lights with the control knob, but the living-room switch is dead. Electronic ignition systems fail differently: a receiver that lost pairing, a dead battery pack, or a module that no longer sparks. We isolate the control path instead of replacing every part on the tray.
Soot, lazy flame, and delayed ignition
Logs that sit off the pins dump flame onto the glass. Spider webs close burner ports. A gasket that has gone flat lets room air wash the fire. The result is a black film and a whoosh on light-off. Cleaning is part of the repair; so is putting the log set back to the manufacturer diagram. If the burner itself is warped or the valve is slow to open, that is a parts job and we will say so.
Blowers, glass, and media
Custom homes in The Dominion and along Scenic Loop often have blowers that have dried out after years of sitting. We test the limit switch and motor before ordering a replacement. Fogged or cracked ceramic glass is a safety item, not a cosmetic one. Melted glass media and crushed ember beds get documented so you can decide what to restore.
Parts we typically carry versus parts we order
Thermocouples, thermopiles, common igniters, and a handful of millivolt valves ride on the truck because they fail often enough in this climate. Brand-specific electronic modules, ceramic glass, and some blower motors get ordered. You will know which category you are in before we leave. We do not keep a warehouse of decorative logs, and we will not install a log set that does not match the burner it sits on just because it “looks close.”
If a previous technician left a fireplace with a bypassed sensor or a valve held open with a workaround, we undo that or we shut the unit down. San Antonio’s mild winters are not a reason to run an appliance without its safety circuit. The same rule applies to vent-free ODS pilots. Cleaning an ODS is a repair. Defeating it is not.
Repair after a long vacancy
Houses that sat on the market in Alamo Heights or The Dominion, and rentals that turned over in the Medical Center area, often have fireplaces that have not been fired in two or three seasons. Rubber parts dry. Spiders move in. The gas may have been shut off for a remodel and never opened. We treat those as inspection plus repair, not as a five-minute light-up. If you are about to host family on a holiday weekend, say so when you call so we can be honest about parts lead time.
We do not bypass safety sensors. We do not convert a vented fireplace into a vent-free unit as a shortcut. We do not leave a fireplace in service with a blocked cap or a leaking valve. If the right next step is a licensed plumber on the gas piping, or a mason on a crumbling firebox in Monte Vista, the report will name that instead of stretching an appliance repair.
