Why gas fireplaces in this city get dirty while they sit

San Antonio does not produce creosote the way a wood stove does. It produces dust. Fine limestone powder, oak pollen, cedar, pet hair, and lint from a house that stays closed under air conditioning all migrate into the firebox through a tired gasket. Spiders follow the smell of gas into the burner ports. The fireplace can look fine with the glass on and still have half the ports closed.

When you finally light it, the flame leans, the glass whites out, and soot prints on the surround. Homeowners in Stone Oak and along Bandera Road often assume they need a new log set. Most of the time they need the glass off, the burner vacuumed and brushed, the logs set back on the pins, and a gasket that actually seals.

What the cleaning visit includes

We protect the hearth, remove the glass, and clean both faces with a fireplace-safe product — not household ammonia, which etches ceramic glass. Burner ports are cleared individually. The pilot hood and orifice get the same treatment because a dirty pilot is what makes a freshly cleaned burner look like it still has a problem. Ember material is loosened and redistributed. Glass media that has clumped or discolored is noted; we do not dump cheap sand into a modern linear burner to make it “look full.”

If the gasket is flattened, cleaning alone will not last. We will say so and quote a gasket set as repair. If sensors are weak, that is not a cleaning issue — book troubleshooting or the 20-point inspection so we can measure them.

Linear modern units versus oak log sets

Newer linear fireplaces in Terrell Hills remodels and custom Helotes houses use glass or stone media and a long ribbon burner. Those burners clog in a stripe: one section of flame drops out and the rest looks theatrical. Traditional oak logs in Monte Vista and King William masonry openings soot when a log has been shifted “to look more real.” Both types need the manufacturer layout, not a magazine photo.

What we need from you on cleaning day

Access to an outdoor hose bib is useful if we are rinsing tools, not required. A cleared hearth is required. If the fireplace is a see-through unit between a living room and a dining room, tell us — those glass panels take longer and we will plan the slot that way. Please do not spray store-bought foam into the firebox before we arrive. It leaves a residue that has to be picked out of burner ports by hand.

After cleaning, run the fireplace for a short test fire while we are still there. The first light after a deep clean can show a small amount of dust burn-off. That should be brief. Ongoing white film is a gasket or log-layout issue, and we will flag it before we pack up. If you only wanted the glass done and we find a safety problem, we will stop and talk. Cleaning is not a reason to ignore a cracked ceramic panel.

Outdoor kitchens and fire tables

Some Helotes and Dominion properties have a matching outdoor gas feature. We can look at it on the same trip if you mention it. Those burners live in a harsher environment and clog faster. They are not billed as the indoor cleaning unless we agree up front. Indoor work stays the priority because that is the appliance attached to your living space and your CO detector.

Once a year is enough for most homes if the gasket is sound. Heavy pet hair, a fireplace that runs daily in January, or a unit that sits under a ceiling fan will film faster. If you cleaned the glass last month and it is already cloudy, stop wiping and have the interior checked. Repeated abrasive cleaning is how glass gets permanently hazy.

Cleaning is also the right add-on when you are already having a repair done. A new thermocouple in a dirty firebox is a wasted part. We would rather do both on the same appointment. Serving San Antonio, New Braunfels, Schertz, Boerne, and Helotes.

Cleaning questions

Can I just clean the glass myself?+

You can wipe the room side with a non-ammonia cleaner. Interior film, burner dust, and gasket leaks need the glass off. Ammonia cleaners can stain ceramic glass permanently.

Why does the glass film over again so fast?+

Usually a tired gasket, logs off the pins, or blocked burner ports. Cleaning the glass without fixing those three repeats the haze.

Is cleaning the same as the $99 inspection?+

Cleaning is focused on the firebox, burner, glass, and media. The inspection adds sensor readings, leak checks, and a 20-point report.
